http://democracynow.org - After touting its "successful" counterterrorism model in Yemen, the United States has evacuated its remaining personnel, including 100 special operations forces from a military base seen as key in the drone war against al-Qaeda. This comes amidst worsening violence between government forces and Shia Houthi rebels, and an attack claimed by the Islamic State that killed dozens of worshipers at two mosques. The United Nations has warned Yemen is on the brink of an "Iraq-Libya-Syria"-type civil war. We are joined by Iona Craig, a journalist who was based in Sana'a for four years as the Yemen correspondent for The Times of London. In a previous CaspianReport, released back in 2011, we argued about the likelihood of a civil war in Yemen and that the Iranian back Houthi rebellion would trigger a new front in the ongoing Saudi-Iranian cold war. The other fronts being Syria, Lebanon and Iraq. Now that Yemen is once again on the brink of civil war, and facing a Zaidi-Shia led uprising in the North and an al-Qaeda led uprising in the South, all the while being bombed by neighboring Arab states, let’s take a step back and look at the origins of the current crisis. CaspianReport is just one person's perspective on global events, geopolitics, histories and the cultures of the world. Visit our Facebook, LiveLeak and Twitter channels for more information. Yemen’s government has been overthrown by Iran. It gives us a glimpse into Iran’s strategy: To encircle its enemies and to rule the entire Middle East.
Part 1: http://youtu.be/lXTgxWpXuB0 Part 2: http://youtu.be/4-cyjblShms Leader of Yemen’s Ansarullah movement, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi has slammed Saudi Arabia as a quote-troublesome, hostile neighbor, which is implementing US-Israeli projects in the region. Abdul-Malik al-Houthi described the Saudi airstrikes in Yemen as criminal and unjustified aggression, adding that Riyadh is walking on the path of occupation, destruction and division of Yemen. He said Israel is the first regime that felt threatened by the Ansarullah victories in Yemen. Houthi added that Tel Aviv turned to Saudi Arabia because both sides have mutual interests. According to the Houthi leader, Al Saud regime is one of the root-causes of problems in Yemen. Houthi promisec that Saudi-Western project to chokehold the people of Yemen will fail and the Yemeni nation as well as the army and popular committees will confront the invaders with full force. Houthi however said that the invasion of Yemen is not an easy task. He advised Egypt against selling itself out to Saudi Arabia and the US. http://democracynow.org - As Saudi Arabia and Egypt threaten to send ground troops into Yemen, we look at the roots of the crisis. While many analysts have described the fighting as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran, journalist Iona Craig says the fighting stems from a domestic conflict. "People try to frame this as an Iran versus Saudi kind of battle, which it has sort of become. But it is very much because of domestic politics," explains Iona Craig, who recently spent four years reporting from Sana'a. We also speak to Brian Whitaker, former Middle East editor at The Guardian, about the decades-old history of Saudi intervention in Yemen. With Yemen further falling in the cobweb of sectarian war and heavy clashes, India has intensified efforts to evacuate its nationals from the West Asian country. Minister of State for External Affairs, General VK Singh, will leave for Djibouti on Tuesday to supervise the rescue efforts. Air India has already sent its 180-seater Airbus A320 aircraft to Yemen's capital Sana'a to evacutate stranded citizens via Muscat. Two passenger ships, with a capacity of 1200, have also been sent to Djibouti Port for evacuation. On Saturday, as many as 80 Indians left Sana'a for Djibouti from where they were assisted by the Indian mission. All the 80 passengers have arrived in India.
There are signs that Yemen is falling deeper into turmoil - just hours after the President stepped down. Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi's resignation came one day after he struck a deal with Shia Houthi rebels.

The 2013 mass surveillance disclosures refer to media reports which revealed operational details of the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) and its international partners' mass surveillance of foreign nationals and U.S. citizens. Aside from its partnership with federal agencies, the NSA-led surveillance involves extensive cooperation with foreign governments and intelligence agencies of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Germany, the latter classified in NSA documents as being both a partner and a target. Data collected in foreign countries by XKeyscore, for example, have landed directly on "President Obama's desk". Although disclosures of the general scope of the program were made in 2006,[2] a series of articles attracted significant public attention on 6 June 2013, when documents made public by Edward Snowden were first published simultaneously by The Washington Post and The Guardian. These documents included operational details of the "scale of domestic surveillance", according to journalist Glenn Greenwald.[3] Several days later, President Obama reassured the American public that stringent controls placed by the United States Congress and the FISA Court have ensured that "nobody" is listening to the phone calls of U.S. citizens.[4] On 14 June 2013, the main source of these disclosures, Edward Snowden, was formally charged by U.S. federal prosecutors for violating the Espionage Act of 1917 due to his unauthorized communication and theft of government property. Several weeks later, Snowden, who subsequently fled to Russia via Hong Kong, was granted temporary asylum by the Russian government. This contributed to a deterioration of Russia--United States relations. On 6 August, President Obama made a public appearance on national television where he reiterated that "We don't have a domestic spying program" and "There is no spying on Americans".[5] Despite Obama's reassurances, however, social movements such as Restore the Fourth have arisen as a form of protest against mass surveillance. Domestic spying programmes in other countries such as France, the UK, and India have also been brought to light. On the legal front, the EFF joined a coalition of diverse groups filing lawsuits against the NSA. Several human rights organizations have urged the Obama administration not to persecute, but to protect "whistleblower Snowden". These groups include Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Transparency International, and the Index on Censorship. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_mass_surveillance_disclosures

UN-brokered talks aimed at resolving the escalating political crisis in Yemen will be held in Doha, the UN envoy to Yemen has said, after the internationally recognised Yemeni government appealed to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) for military assistance. A day after warning the UN Security Council that Yemen was on the brink of civil war, Jamal Benomar announced on Monday that talks between the Yemeni parties would take place in the Qatari capital, and that any agreement reached would be signed in Riyadh. Earlier in the day, Prince Saud Al Faisal, Saudi Arabia's foreign minister, said that his country would "take necessary measures if needed" to protect Yemen's sovereignty after the country's government, holed up in the southern port city of Aden, appealed to the GCC members for help. Iran has been repeatedly accused of supporting the Houthis, the armed group that controls the country's north, including the capital Sanaa, an allegation both Iran and the Yemeni group deny. "We are against Iran's intervention in Yemen ... it is actually an act of aggression," Faisal said. "We are keen on protecting Yemen’s sovereignty, the legitimacy of Yemen represented by President Hadi. "We hope that the crisis can be resolved peacefully and we are ready to respond to any demand that the president requests, whatever it is to support him," he said. Riyadh Yaseen, Yemen's newly appointed foreign minister, has asked for military intervention from the GCC and the imposition of a no-fly zone by the UN. The GCC is an alliance of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE and Oman; and its Peninsula Shield Force boasts about 40,000 troops and has a permanent base in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province. "We've had enough, we can't watch them occupying airports and cities, destroying Yemen's infrastructure, and we sit there and watch", Yaseen told Al Jazeera on Monday. "We can't allow Iran to take over our country." The request came a day after Prince Mohammed Bin Nayef, the Saudi interior minister, said the GCC was ready to take "all efforts" to defend the country's security". Houthis took over the democratically elected government headed by Hadi in February and appointed Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, a cousin of the group's leader, as the new president. The GCC countries have since lined up to support Hadi and have moved their embassies to Aden to back Hadi against the group. Hadi, who is also backed by Western states, has been struggling to reassert his authority since escaping house arrest and fleeing to Aden last month. The Houthis have continued to seize more parts of the country and on Saturday took control of parts of the strategic city of Taiz, as they pushed further south towards Aden. The group, which hails from the northern region of Saada, insists its territorial advance is an outgrowth of its growing popular support. But the Houthis have continued a violent crackdown on opposition protests in the country. In the latest incident, at least six people were killed after Houthis fired bullets and tear gas to disperse thousands of demonstrators demanding their withdrawal from the southern Yemen, a medical official reported. Scores of other protesters were also reportedly wounded in the massive demonstrations in the country's third largest city of Taiz, which the Houthis seized over the weekend. Source: Al Jazeera

Yemen is in the middle of a deadly rivalry between Saudi Arabia’s Sunni fundamentalist ruling family and Iran’s Shia-based Islamic revolution with tensions rising over the latter's nuclear ambitions. The most recent manifestation of the Sunni-Shia conflict in Yemen was in the deadly series of suicide bomb attacks that occurred there on Friday taking the lives of about 150 people. The ongoing crisis in Yemen has drawn increased focus from other countries in the region and its allies overseas. U.S. Ambassador to Yemen Matthew Tueller says he is "relatively optimistic" that a new power-sharing agreement can be reached between the internationally recognized government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and the Houthi rebels who control the capital, Sana'a. Fighters from Yemen's Houthi rebel movement are advancing into southern Yemen, clashing with forces allied to President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi. Rebels and soldiers loyal to Mr Hadi's ousted predecessor reportedly entered the provincial capital of Dhalea and the Red Sea port of Mukha on Tuesday. Pro-Houthi troops also killed at least four people protesting in and around the third city of Taizz, medics said.
The U.S. withdrew its remaining military personnel from Yemen amid increasing violence and volatility. The unstable situation in the country also led Britain to pull its forces out the country. Yemen's government has appealed for military help from its Gulf Arab neighbours and asked the UN to impose a no-fly zone over parts of the country. The call comes as Saudi Arabia's foreign minister said the kingdom was ready "to take necessary measures if needed" in Yemen's political crisis. Al Jazeera's Charlie Angela reports.
Saudi Arabia's foreign minister has said the kingdom is ready "to take necessary measures if needed" over Yemen's political crisis, after denouncing Iran's alleged role in the turmoil as an "act of aggression." Prince Saud Al Faisal said on Monday that Riyadh would protect Yemen's sovereignty after the country's embattled government, holed up in the southern port city of Aden, asked Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations for military assistance. Iran has been repeatedly accused of supporting the Houthis, the armed group that seized the capital Sanaa in September, an allegation both Tehran and the group deny. "We are against Iran's intervention in Yemen ... it is actually an act of aggression," the minister said. "We are keen on protecting Yemen’s sovereignty, the legitimacy of Yemen represented by President Hadi. "We hope that the crisis can be resolved peacefully and we are ready to respond to any demand that the president requests, whatever it is to support him. "We are ready to take the necessary measures if needed," he said. Riyadh Yaseen, Yemen's newly-appointed foreign minister, has asked for military intervention from the GCC and the imposition of a no-fly zone by the United Nations. "We can't allow Iran to take over our country." The request came a day after Prince Mohammed Bin Nayef, the Saudi interior minister, said the GCC was ready to take "all efforts" to defend the country's security. "Yemen is sliding into a dark tunnel which would have serious consequences not only on Yemen but on security and stability in the region," because "the security of Yemen and of the GCC countries is an indivisible whole," he said. Earlier this year, the Houthis put Hadi, the elected president, under house arrest, and appointed Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, a cousin of the group's leader, as the new president. Sunni Gulf countries have since lined up to support Hadi and have moved their embassies to Aden to back him against the Shia group.

The UN Security Council will meet on Sunday to discuss the deadly turmoil in Yemen. It comes after the country’s president called for an “urgent intervention” by the Council. On Saturday, Abed Rabbu Mansour Hadi accused Shi’ite Houthis – who control the capital Sanaa – of staging a coup against him. Speaking from Aden, he also said that he would raise “Yemen’s flag” in their northern stronghold. Fighting is spreading across the country. Almost 140 people were killed last week when two Shi’ite mosques were bombed in the capital. ISIL claimed responsibility for the attacks. In a letter to the UN Security Council, Hadi called on the body “to rise up to its responsibilities” to protect Yemen. The Council is negotiating a statement on Yemen that could be adopted during Sunday’s meeting, according to diplomats.

Yemen's Shiite rebels issued a call to arms Saturday to battle forces loyal to the country's embattled president, as U.S. troops were evacuating a southern air base crucial to America's drone strike program after al-Qaida militants seized a nearby city. The turmoil comes as Yemen battles al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, the target of the drone program, and faces a purported affiliate of the extremist Islamic State group that claimed responsibility for a series of suicide bombings killing at least 137 people Friday. All these factors could push the Arab world's most impoverished country, united only in the 1990s, back toward civil war. "I hate to say this, but I'm hearing the loud and clear beating of the drums of war in Yemen," Mohammed al-Basha, a spokesman for the Yemeni Embassy in Washington, D.C., wrote on Twitter. The Shiite rebels, known as Houthis, swept into Yemen's capital, Sanaa, in September and now control it and nine of the country's 21 provinces. President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, a one-time prisoner of the Houthis in his own home, escaped last month and installed himself in Aden, declaring it the temporary capital amid the Houthi insurrection. Earlier Saturday, Hadi gave his first televised address since fleeing the capital, striking a defiant tone. He described the rebels' rule as "a coup against constitutional legitimacy." He also pledged to raise the Yemeni flag over the Maran mountains, a stronghold for the Houthis, members of the Shiite Zaydi sect that represents nearly 30 percent of Yemen's population. Hadi also said regional Shiite power Iran supported the Houthis, something critics also allege and the rebels deny. Sunni Gulf countries have lined up to support Hadi and have moved their embassies to Aden to back him against the Shiite rebels. Almost immediately after Hadi's speech, the Houthis issued a statement announcing their offensive against security and military institutions loyal to Hadi, calling it a battle against extremists. "The council announces this decision to call the proud sons of the Yemeni people in all regions to unite and support and cooperate with the armed and security forces in confronting terrorist forces," they said in the statement carried by the Houthi-controlled state news agency SABA. Though seizing power in Sanaa and clashing with those protesting their power grab, the Houthis largely haven't resorted to open warfare since beginning their campaign in September. Their statement Saturday immediately recalled the years of war fought in the country, once split between a Marxist south that once was a British colony and a northern republic. As the threat of civil war grew, the U.N. Security Council called an emergency meeting for Sunday afternoon beginning at 3 p.m. (1900 GMT) to discuss the Yemen crisis. The U.N. spokesman's office said that after a briefing on the situation in Yemen, the council would meet in closed session for consultations. Representatives of Yemen and Qatar, which currently heads the Gulf Cooperation Council, were scheduled to speak. Meanwhile Saturday, U.S. troops including Special Forces commandos were evacuating from the al-Annad air base in southern Yemen, Yemeni security and military officials said. The officials did not say whether the troops had left the country. The air base, the country's largest, was believed to have some 100 American troops stationed there. U.S. officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment Saturday.

The Siasat Daily 2015-04-09The Republic of Yemen (Arabic: الجمهورية اليمنية al-Jumhūrīyah al-Yamanīyah), commonly known as Yemen i/ˈjɛmən/ (Arabic: اليَمَن al-Yaman), is a country located in Western Asia, occupying the southwestern to southern end of the Arabian Peninsula. It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west, and Oman to the east. Yemen is considered one of the poorest countries in the Arab world. Its capital and largest city is Sana'a. Yemen's territory includes over 200 islands, the largest of which is Socotra, about 415 km (258 mi) to the south of mainland Yemen, off the coast of Somalia. It is the only state in the Arabian Peninsula to have a purely republican form of government. Approximately 53% of Yemenis are Sunnis, while 45% are Zaydi Shias.
One etymology derives Yemen from yamin, meaning "on the right side", as the south is on the right when facing the sunrise. Another derives Yemen from yumn, meaning "felicity", as the region is fertile. The Romans called it Arabia Felix (Happy Arabia) as opposed to Arabia Deserta (Deserted Arabia), which was their term for northern Arabia.
